Neutron-Activation Analysis of Pottery from Pinson Mounds and Nearby Sites in Western Tennessee: Local Production vs. Long-Distance Importation
Abstract
Investigations at Pinson Mounds, a major Middle Woodland ceremonial center in west-central Tennessee, have recovered considerable quantities of stylistically non-local pottery. Neutron activation analysis was conducted at the Missouri University Research Reactor on 114 pottery samples from Pinson, using 40 pottery samples from sites near Pinson as a locally produced compositional baseline. This study indicates that all analyzed pottery from Pinson was locally produced; no evidence was found for long-distance importation of pottery. Implications of this study to other Middle Woodland ceremonial centers are presented, as are the dynamics of non-Pinson vessel movement in the area.
