The Use of Blue-Grey Chert in Midwestern Prehistory

C. A. Morrow, J. M. Elam, and M. D. Glascock (1992) Midcontinental Journal of Archaeology 17(2): 166–197.

Abstract

The use of blue-gray chert in the midwestern United States has been of interest to archaeologists for over a century. Assumptions about several sources for these cherts have become entrenched in the literature. We suggest that some of these assumptions are in error and that it is important to critically examine ideas about these chert sources. This study begins the process of building a baseline of data for identifying one of these cherts, Cobden-Dongola, through trace element analysis.
